Kaylee's Story...
Kaylee was born on December 1, 2003. My pregnancy was great, so we weren’t expecting any problems. During delivery Kaylee’s heart rate went down several times. By the time the doctor delivered her she was not breathing. They did CPR on her and when she came to, she started having uncontrollable seizures. The pediatrician on duty was honest and told us she was out of her league. She recommended med flighting her to a different hospital. We chose AR Children’s Hospital. Angel One came and flew her there safely. When she got there she was put on a study that is now FDA approved (The Head Cooling Cap). She spent 31 days in the hospital, with little hope from the doctors. They didn’t think our bug (nickname) was going to go home. Our family started praying over her. The hardest thing as parents that we had to do was give our child back to God. To tell him that if she was better in heaven than to take her. I’m not sure that I meant it, but God gave us our baby back anyway. She is such a joy and a blessing to have.
We had to learn how to take care of her before they sent her home. It was overwhelming a first. She was put on Phenobarbital for the seizures. Kaylee was on this med for about a year before being weaned off. She did great for about three years. Then on July 29, 2007 she had a seizure in my arms at church while I was teaching the pre teen Sunday School Class. I wasn’t quite sure it was a seizure, since I had not seen her have one before. I had one of the students go get Mark (my husband) and my sister-n-law (RN). We determined she needed to go to the ER. So we rushed her out of the church to the car. A few seconds down the road we decided we would call an ambulance instead. They got there after 10 minutes. Kaylee had already stopped seizing. We went to Children’s where they monitored her for a little while and sent her home on a med called Keppra and Diastat for emergencies.
Kaylee averages a seizure every other month. When they become more frequent they add more meds. Kaylee is now on Trileptol and Keppra. Kaylee Bug is doing well and is a very happy five year old. Epilepsy is not the only thing she has, but is one of our struggles. I want to thank PEACE for being apart of our lives. I’ve been apart of things I would not have had the opportunity to be a part of because of PEACE.
